The JHSSI has been involved in many ongoing projects. We are proud of our efforts at taking oral histories and have compiled a collection of oral histories which paint a fascinating picture of life on Staten Island through the years. We are very proud of the DVD put out through the efforts of Lenore Miller which recounts the Jewish stories of SI Jewish veterans.
We are also involved in partnership with other community organizations in preserving records and artifacts relating to the history of the Staten Island Jewish community. We were instrumental in preserving the remaining records of Congregation Agudas Achim Anshei Chesed (the Jersey St. Synagogue) in partnership with Richmondtown Restoration as well as some important artifacts relating to that congregation.
Another aspect of our work is to provide public programs which serve to spread knowledge of Jewish history. Our programs have included such diverse events as a training session in oral history given by Columbia University scholars, a "Jewish Antiques Road Show, a panel on reminiscences of Jersey St, West Brighten and Port Richmond, a presentation of the Jews of Finland, a lecture on Abel Kiviat a Staten Island Jewish Olympian, a presentation by the head of the only Jewish Studies Department in China, and an overnight trip to the Yiddish Book Center in Amhurst Mass among others.
We have partnered with other organizations such as the Richmondtown Restoration, the College of Staten Island, the JCC, the Jewish War Veterans, Temple Israel and Temple Emanu-El we are grateful for those individuals and organizations whop have helped sponsor our work. Our special thanks go to Cesar Claro and the Northfields Bank foundation which he heads.
We invite you to help us in our work by joining, participating in our programs and contributing to our work. We also look forward to your input, suggestions and interest.
